Big Apple Tourist

A couple of weeks ago Tina and I spent a short weekend playing tourists in New York City. I don't know how I've managed it, but I had never been there before. Manhattan is huge. Beside just walking around in awe (and occasional disgust), our three major activities were:
  • Rent bicycles and explore the whole of Central Park
What's a trip to NYC without a taste of Central Park? I don't know, actually. This was super-fun. There are plenty of dudes just standing around waiting for you to rent bikes with few working gears for negotiable sums of cash. What an enormous park!

  • Go out with a group of friends to some packed NYC bars
What is a trip to NYC without a taste of the nightlife? I don't know, actually. Cocktails galore, bartenders that have better things to do than serve you drinks, taxi rides, and good company. We even got to spend some time in the daylight sipping on some sangria with one of Tina's best friends on a boat/bar!

  • Boat ride out to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
What is a trip to NYC without some history and culture? I don't know, actually. I recommend taking the volunteer guided tour at Ellis Island - our guy was intense, and very informative when you could hear him. Did you know that nothing bad ever happened at Ellis Island, ever? Tina and I inferred that from the lack of realism in the rosy accounts of how immigrants were treated. You know what they say: you can't always trust what you read on a little placard in the museum on Ellis Island that was formerly a historic immigrant processing facility. Oh, and that statue of liberty, she is one fine manwoman. What androgynous features!

We probably could have packed more into the trip, but I didn't even get there until Saturday afternoon (on account of working in DC from 2AM to 7AM Saturday morning!). I took the DC2NY bus from... DC... to... NY and it wasn't that bad. I talked to a congressional intern about religion/politics/relationships, watched a crappy comedy/romance/"action" movie, and didn't read much of a book. That's all I have to say about that. I slept through the drive home because my tourist body from head to toe was all tuckered out!
